Would somebody let me know if this works?
I won’t be able to get on to Tumblr here, but apparently you can post by email (and if you’re reading this, it’s true!) I won’t see replies, or anything, obviously. Could one of the people who follow my Tumblr and have my email address let me know if this shows up okay? So, in actual news, I’ve arrived in Shanghai! I’ll be brief, just jumping online in my room before I get some sleep. This morning, I found out that I only had one hour between my arrival time in Sydney and my departure time to Shanghai. Okay, that’s a lie. I already knew that. What I actually found out is that an hour is maybe not a very long time to traverse an airport and customs and get onto an international flight. Go figure. But long story short, everything ended up going very smoothly all the way through. After getting to Shanghai, I went straight to catch a cab to my Hostel. I gave the address, and then had a conversation in Chinese which basically amounted to “How far is it?” “Very far!” “Haha, no problem.” The rest of the 50 minute cab ride (not expensive over here) was in silence, but that’s down to my lack of social skills and anything to say, rather than inability to say it, and I was grinning inwardly the whole way about the fact that I was actually using Chinese in China. Traffic here is not as crazy as I expected from what I’d heard, but still pretty crazy. More on that some other time, probably. Lastly, after getting all set up in my room, I went for dinner. A 24-hour McDonalds and KFC are right across the road, but I wanted to avoid getting Western takeaway for my first meal here. I walked around for a bit and nearly succumbed before finding some street food places. Success! I got some pretty delicious noodles from one place, and some pretty tasteless kebabs from another. Again, pretty smug about ordering it all in Chinese. I did forget to ask what kind of meat was on the kebabs, not that I’m terribly concerned. It’s also worth mentioning that Shanghai of course puts Brisbane to shame in every conceivable way with the possible exception of traffic. In Brisbane I’d have been lucky to find anything open at this time of night… Here, everything is open, from shops to street stalls. Well, that’s all for now. I’m off to sleep, and hopefully explore the city a bit tomorrow.
